About a Free Thinker

Who do I think I am?

I’m a survivor of the 1960’s, and I’m feeling especially nostalgic for days gone by, now that I have so much time to think. Yes, it was a tumultuous and often violent era, emboldened by the call for radical change. The nexus of intersecting revolutions over war, racism, and gender equality, the counterculture of the 1960’s was fueled by rock-n-roll and civil disobedience. It was a clash of titanic proportions. And by the time the magic carpet ride ended, I was both exhilarated and exhausted.

Think of the movie and soundtrack to Apocalypse Now and you’ll get a near perfect audio-visual. The movie wasn’t made in the sixties but it encapsulated the conflict and chaos of the times. I am certainly not an anarchist, but I do miss the energy and the promise of change – like a child on Christmas Eve. Unfortunately, anticipation is too often followed by a major letdown, like crashing after a speed bender.

Fortunately, in a post-Covid world, everything old is new again. I’ve rediscovered the popular culture of past and present generations, including the music, movies, and TV shows that bring back so many memories. And I’ve thoroughly enjoyed these virtual trips into days gone by. They’ve reminded me of the good times which enriched my life, then and now; and the bad times that taught me important lessons about myself and the world around me.

Why another blog?

The internet is already overpopulated by countless gurus who may (or may not) be experts on every google-able subject imaginable. Maybe I’m naive about what people want. But I wanted to share random thoughts that came back to me while creating this website. And I wanted to share my insights in a respectful, often playful manner, through stories, essays, and poetry.

Why now?

The more I learn about different people and their times, the more common ground I discover. Just like you all, I enjoy a good laugh; feel better after a good cry; and am uplifted by faith, family, and friends. So please enjoy the links and videos. My website is not for-profit but I hope you will find it profitable, if not engaging. Let’s rediscover the spirit of Peace, Love, and Understanding that should have been the legacy of the 1960’s.
