Dignity

Unkempt dreadlocks over a threadbare suit
He enters the subway car with confident stride
the scent of neglect clearing a path for Him
as if He were a king
Chin uplifted
He takes a seat
gazing without apology at onlookers
who pretend not to notice His grand entrance
Slowly
Gracefully
each movement Deliberate
He extracts a half-eaten candy bar from a crumpled paper bag
fastidiously taking a bite
while brushing invisible crumbs from His grimy jacket
Poverty of Circumstance has not diminished His Dignity
